1 in 8 blighted by ID theft in the UK

The research firm YouGov polled over two thousands UK adults and 12% answered that they had been a victim of ID theft in the past year. The survey was backed by online security merchant VeriSign.

Increasingly complex attacks and a lack of understanding were blamed for the majority of the results. Most member of the public unaware of simple was such as shredding documents can protect them.

The poll showed that younger people tended to be more knowledgeable with just 5% falling to ID theft. People of 45 and over were shown to be most at risk with over 14% reporting they had been affected.

The average amount stolen was £463 per person which points to over £2.61bn being lost in one year by UK residents.
