Everyone should consider identity fraud and how to protect
themselves as it’s on the increase and in the worse case could cost you
serious money if a fraudster gets access to your bank account, in the
best case it’ll cost you a lot of time and grief cancelling cards and
re-creating computer passwords.
With the introduction of chip and pin security at retail outlets
fraudsters are turning to “card holder not present” fraud in increasing
numbers so disposing of anything that has your name and address on has
a value to them.
We thought it might be useful to share our top tips to help protect you and make the villain’s job harder:
- Shred everything containing personal data – including the envelope – it sounds obvious but it’s amazing how many people forget.
- Be careful who you give your personal information to – fraudsters can be very convincing.
- Change passwords and pin numbers frequently and make them
difficult for fraudsters to work out – the dogs name isn’t going to be
secure enough!
- Limit the personal information you keep in your travel bag or
wallet. One stolen handbag could be the passport to someone’s new
identity!
- Keep your dustbin secure and never put personal records in it –
you’d be surprised how many fraudsters will go through your rubbish –
yuck!
